British Values

All maintained schools must meet the requirements set out in section 78 of the Education Act 2002 and promote the spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development of their pupils through the provision of a broad and balanced curriculum. In addition, there are specific requirements to actively promote ‘British Values’ which the government has defined as democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs.

Through ensuring pupils’ spiritual, social, moral and cultural development, Stoke Goldington CE First School actively promotes fundamental British values through our collective worship, establishing a strong school ethos supported by effective relationships throughout the school, and by providing relevant activities beyond the classroom.

Pupils at Stoke Goldington CE First School are encouraged to regard people of all faiths, races and cultures with respect and tolerance. It is expected that our pupils understand that while different people may hold different views about what is ‘right’ and ‘wrong’, all people living in England are subject to its law. The school’s ethos and teaching support the rule of English civil and criminal law.

Democracy; respect for democracy and support for participation in the democratic process

Some of the things we do…….

  • Provide pupils with a broad general knowledge of, and promote respect for, public institutions and services
  • Teach children about how they can influence decision making through the democratic process
  • Encourage pupils to become involved in the school council and the decision making process
  • Hold mock elections, vote and make decisions with a show of hands
  • Help pupils express their views
  • Discuss perceived injustices so they can be peacefully resolved

The rule of law; the respect for the basis on which the law is made and applies in England

Some of the things we do…….

  • Involve pupils in formulating their own classroom rules
  • Ensure school rules and expectations are clear and reasonable
  • Home/School agreements are in place
  • Help pupils distinguish between ‘right’ and ‘wrong’
  • Help pupils to respect the law
  • Include visits from the police as part of the curriculum
  • Use restorative justice approaches to resolving conflicts

Individual liberty; equality of opportunity for all and support and respect for the liberties of all within the law

  • Support pupils to develop their self-knowledge, self-esteem, and self-confidence
  • Encourage pupils to take responsibility for their behaviour
  • Implement a strong anti-bullying culture
  • Pupils are encouraged to use the ‘Friendship Stop’
  • Pupils raise money for charities like the Comic Relief, Children in Need, Christian Aid, and Samaritans Purse which stand up for the rights of children.
  • Children are taught how to keep themselves safe and understand how to stay safe online.

  • ‘Respect’ is one of our core Christian Values and we focus on respect in our Collective Worship
  • Our RE programme is based on the Milton Keynes Agreed Syllabus and encourages study of a variety of faiths.
  • Support and promote respect for our individual differences
  • Help pupils acquire an understanding of and respect for their own and other cultures and ways of life
  • Challenge any discriminatory behaviour
  • Organise visits to different places of worship
  • Develop critical thinking skills
  • Discuss similarities and differences between people such as differences of faith, ethnicity, disability, and gender.
